Eye
surgery
Laser and non-laser surgery
Although the terms Laser Eye Surgery and
Refractive Surgery are commonly used as if they were
interchangeable, this is not the case. Lasers may be used
to treat non-refractive conditions (e.g. to seal a
retinal tear), while radial keratotomy is an example of
refractive surgery without the use of a laser.
Types of eye surgeries
Refractive
surgery aims to correct errors of refraction in the
eye, reducing or eliminating the need for corrective
lenses
- Keratomilleusis
- Automated lamellar keratoplasty
(ALK)
- Laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis
(LASIK)
- Laser assisted sub-epithelial
keratomileusis (LASEK), aka Epi-LASIK
- Photorefractive keratectomy
(PRK)
- Laser thermal keratoplasty
(LTK)
- Conductive keratoplasty
(CK)
- Limbal relaxing incisions
(LRI)
- Anterior ciliary sclerotomy
(ACS)
- Astigmatic keratotomy (AK), aka
Arcuate keratotomy or Transverse
keratotomy
- Radial keratotomy
(RK)
- Hexagonal keratotomy
(HK)
- Epikeratophakia
- Corneal ring segments
(Intacs)
- Implantable contact
lenses
- Scleral expansion
bands
Cataract
Surgery to remove the cloudy human lens which can be
replaced with a plastic lens implant
- Intracapsular cataract extraction
(ICCE)
- Extracapsular cataract extraction
(ECCE)
- Phacoemulsification
- YAG laser capsulotomy is used to
clear the back implant surface
if the cloudy posterior capsule which
surrounds the lens implant
Glaucoma
Surgery to allow escape of excess fluid from the eye
to lower intraocular pressure
- Goniotomy
- Iridotomy
- Laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI)
- Trabeculectomy
- Trabeculoplasty
- Laser trabeculoplasty (LTP)
- Argon laser Trabeculoplasty (ALT)
- Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)
- Trabeculotomy
Corneal Surgery
- Penetrating keratoplasty (PK), aka
Corneal transplant surgery, is used to remove a
cloudy/diseased cornea and replace it with a clear
donor cornea
- Phototherapeutic keratectomy
(PTK)
- Pterygium removal
Vitreal-Retinal
Surgery
- Vitrectomy
- Trans pars plana vitrectomy (TPPV)
- Pan retinal photocoagulation
(PRP)
- Retinal Detachment Repair
- Scleral Buckle
- Pneumatic Retinopexy
- Macular Hole Repair
- Sclerochoroidectomy
Strabismus Surgery
- Weakening Procedures

- Tenectomy
- Tenotomy
- Stengthening Procedures
- Resection
